For centuries, the scandals, accomplishments and often bizarre events of the past have fascinated millions across the globe, igniting a desire within them to uncover more of history’s unsolved truths. An uncommon fact about history: almost 95% of history is unrecorded, despite our vast knowledge of some of the world’s most notorious rulers, bloodiest battles and enormous empires. Historians of today are fighting a constant battle to educate others about the truths of history, rather than the popular played-down versions and a big way of achieving this is through social media; primarily, TikTok.
HistoryTok, as it is known, is where historians and history lovers alike create engaging educational content to help their viewers learn more about some of the world’s most significant events, periods or people. This has sparked a massive increase in the amount of young people taking an interest in history and/or pursuing a high educational study of it. Additionally, this has spiked a rise in historical publications including books and film, and a higher demand for historian events—TikTok has played a huge role in the comeback of history as a popular passion in the younger generation.
Some historytokers or history influencers have become popular due to their exciting and unique content, often focusing on taboo or lesser talked about subjects. And today, I am thrilled to welcome three of my favourite historytokers to talk about their TikTok journey and how they utilise the platform to educate the next generation of historians; TheHistoryGossip, The_Historical_Gal and Katerynashistory!
TheHistoryGossip a.k.a. Katie is a bestselling author of her book, The History Gossip, who shares her knowledge of history with a side of saucy wit and plenty of vulgarity! The_Historical_Gal a.k.a. Elizabeth takes us back through time to the Henrician court, showing us beautiful Tudor houses and filling our minds with delicious Tudor facts! And last, but certainly not least, is Katerynashistory a.k.a. Kateryna who teaches us about fierce, resilient female figures of history by cosplaying them—my personal favourites are Catherine de Medici and Hurrem Sultan!
