By no stretch of the imagination, the Tudor era was one of terror and treason, as well as backstabbing and bloodshed. Arrests and executions were rife throughout the Tudor era, especially during the reign of the most notorious Tudor monarch; Henry VIII. Not only was he responsible for sending many of his closest friends, wives and even family members to the chopping block, but over his thirty-eight years as King, he sent an estimated 54,000 to 72,000 people to their deaths!
For context, his three children ruled for a combined total of fifty-six years between them (with Elizabeth I ruling the longest at forty-five years) which is only two less than Henry VIII and they only managed to execute an estimated 2,000 to 5,000 which is a huge difference!
Not since the bloody days of the Wars of the Roses had England witnessed such a huge number of executions or deaths, especially since the nobility was taking a huge hit also. It wasn't just the poor who suffered, but the rich also. It appears the executioner's block gave no mercy to even the highest amongst society.
One must shiver a the mere thought of seeing one's friends or family walking up to the headman's block however, we shall not shiver today as we are joined by Helene Harrison (a.k.a TudorBlogger) to discuss what Tudor executions would have been like to witness and explore into some well-known executions!
Helene is the author of many fabulous books including Elizabethan Rebellions, Tudor Executions, and her latest offering The Many Faces of Anne Boleyn is available to preorder now!
