The love letters of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn | Interview with historian Elizabeth Norton

The love story of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn is one of the most famous in history.

It all started with a handsome, womanizing King falling head over heels for a vibrant, intelligent young lady of his court who would not give into his advances. It sadly ended with a dysfunctional marriage and that tragic young lady being sent to the executioner's block.

Whilst the passion and dedication that Henry VIII showed during his courtship of Anne Boleyn has inspired many to learn more about the tragic couple, their relationship might not be as beautiful or loving as we might expect. Henry VIII absolutely hated writing letters, often dictating them to one of his attenders to write down, but he was so enamored with the young Anne Boleyn that he wrote them himself, hoping that she would return his affections.

Only Anne Boleyn did not return his affections nor did she appear interested in the dedicated King. She, in fact, did not respond to many of his letters, which only further encouraged the King's advances, much to Anne's dismay. One could not refuse the King for long and after a long time of fighting him off, Anne inevitably gave in and made the most out of what she was given--a marriage to a future tyrant and the title of Queen of England.

The letters of Henry VIII have fascinated many historians and history lovers over the years and today, we are delighted to welcome back Dr Elizabeth Norton to discuss these fabulous letters and give us an insight into the early stages of Henry VIII's relationship with Anne Boleyn.
