King Henry VIII of England is arguably more famous for having six wives, of which all but one suffered a tragic demise or downfall because of their husband, rather than for being the second monarch of the newly established Tudor dynasty. Whilst each of his six wives remain iconic and significant to history today for their own unique reasons, it is often his first three wives who catch the attention of historians and history lovers across the globe. His first wife, Catalina de Aragon–divorced and cast aside in favor of her lady-in-waiting. His second, Anne Boleyn–beheaded on false charges of treason, adultery and incest. His third, Jane Seymour–tragically died days after finally providing the King with the son he so desperately craved.
What do these three women have in common other than the man they all married?–they are all believed to have been fierce rivals in regards to their relationships with the King.
Whether this is true or not is what we shall be discussing with today's guest who we are so delighted to welcome back for a third time; Gareth Russell, a brilliant author, historian and expert on Tudor history–especially the six queens of Henry VIII!
Gareth is the author of many fabulous books including Young & Damned & Fair: The Life & Tragedy of Catherine Howard at the Court of Henry VIII; Do Let's Have Another Drink! The Dry Wit and Fizzy Life of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother; and The Ship of Dreams: The Sinking of the Titanic and the End of the Edwardian Era.
