Today's post is a very special one as not only is it the 514th anniversary of the death of the first Tudor monarch, King Henry VII, but today marks the launch of our YouTube channel and what a great first video we have planned for you! We are delighted to announce that today's post is a discussion with one of the leading historians in Tudor history, Gareth Russell, about the marriage of Henry Tudor (as we remember him on this special day) to Elizabeth of York.
A marriage that united the two quarrelling houses of Lancaster and York thus ending the terrible long years of the Wars of the Roses.
Gareth Russell is not only a brilliant historian but a bestselling author. Some of his novels include biographies of former queens Catherine Howard (Young and Damned and Fair: The Life of Catherine Howard, Fifth Wife of King Henry VIII) and the late Queen Mother (Do Let's Have Another Drink: The Singular Wit and Double Measures of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother) as well as his fascinating book on the tragic Titanic sinking; The Ship of Dreams: The Sinking of the Titanic and the End of the Edwardian Era.
In today's podcast, Gareth and I discuss some common opinions and theories surrounding the marriage of Henry Tudor and Elizabeth of York. Is there any evidence to suggest Philippa Gregory's 'claim' that Elizabeth of York and her uncle, Richard III, were indeed lovers? Is the belief that Henry Tudor and Elizabeth of York's marriage was a happy one valid? Might their marriage have had an influence over how their son, the famous tyrant King Henry VIII, might have lived his romantic life? How does this quite overlooked marriage compare to that of the marriage of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, the parents of Henry VIII's first wife, Catherine of Aragon? Might this have impacted the way their daughter would act when her husband's attentions drifted to other women?
All these questions and more shall be answered in The Ill-Fated Wives of Henry VIII's first ever podcast so please click on the link above, give it a watch and (if you liked it), like, comment and subscribe!
